SKIN PROTECTION: YOU NEED SPF THIS SUMMER

Summer is upon us and before you rush out for that fun in the sun, grab your SPF. SPF is vital for your skin health; with your skin being your largest organ it’s imperative to your overall health.

Ever wondered what the letters of SPF mean, Sun Protection Factor!

SPF measures the sunscreens ability to protect against UVB rays, which are the sun rays that cause sunburn and can lead to skin cancer. UVA rays are damaging as well but are not included in the measurement of effectiveness that you see on all SPF products ranging from SPF 15 – 60 or even higher.

Dermatologist generally suggests opting for an SPF in the range of 15 to 30. Also note that sunscreen, when it interacts with water and sweat, loses effectiveness after 60 -90mins depending on the formula, so always be sure to reapply when engaged in water activities.

Speaking of the SPF number/rating you see on the packaging of each product, that number directly correlates to the exponential increase in the time a person is able to stay in the sun before burning. For example: If a person skin would normally start to sunburn after 20 minutes in the sun after applying an SPF 20 that person would be able to stay out in the sun for 400 minutes (20x longer) before starting to become sunburned.

It is also worth noting that after you pass the SPF 50’s and 60’s the FDA has concerns about increased effectiveness, chemicals used to make up high SPF formulations and overall benefits so be mindful when shopping for your SPF.

Now that you know a few things that you needed to know as it relates to sunscreen here are a few suggestions we think you should keep in mind while you are shopping around and preparing for your summer fun in the sun.
